A Fitness Mantra to Improve Your Exercise Experience

Exercise mantra for improved motivation

Say this with me:

“I love getting stronger. I love taking 15 minutes to do what most are unwilling to do.”

The Power of Our Thoughts & Words

The thoughts we think and the words we say are so powerful.

Because our thoughts and words paint our reality

This is why I'm careful with the things I tell myself. When I catch myself being too negative, I intentionally change the dialogue.

Recently I took 15 minutes to do an efficient but intense leg workout. As my leg muscles burned, my heart pounded, and sweat emerged, I found myself thinking, "This sucks. This sucks. This sucks." 😩

But then I decided that my inner dialogue wasn't doing me any favors. In fact, it was just making a difficult situation worse.

So I started saying this instead (out loud, between each set), and my whole experience changed.

“I love getting stronger. I love taking 15 minutes to do what most are unwilling to do.”

Why It Works

There are three reasons why this mantra works:

  1. It shifts my focus from the discomfort of the process to the the positive result I'm gaining.

  2. It reminds me that the discomfort is temporary.

  3. It reminds me that I'm doing something that sets me apart (something the vast majority of people are unwilling to do), which makes me feel proud of myself.

Make It Your Own

Of course, the mantra doesn’t have to be about strength training. You can customize it to fit your own situation. For example:

“I love getting [stronger, faster, fit, in shape, etc.]. I love taking [increment of time] to do what most are unwilling to do.”
