WFPB Chocolate "Milk Shake"

For week #31 of my 2018 challenge to try one new whole-food plant-based (WFPB) recipe each week, I made chocolate shakes! They are a favorite with my kids, and so much healthier than a traditional milk shake.  

What I like about this recipe:

  • Who doesn't love a chocolate shake?!
  • A GREAT option for kids, especially in the warmer months. 
  • Frozen banana gives this shake a creamy texture.
  • It feels like an indulgence, but it's made from simple and nutritious plant-based ingredients. 

What I ended up using/doing:

Note: This recipe is for one large shake. Double or triple the recipe as needed for multiple shakes.  

  • 1 ripe banana, peeled and frozen (This is a great way to store extra bananas that you won't be able to eat before they go bad.)
  • 2 Medjool dates, pitted (These add a caramel-like sweetness . They can often be found in the produce section of the grocery store, or you can buy them online.)
  • 1 cup of almond, cashew, or other nondairy milk. 
  • 1 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • A couple drops of pure vanilla extract
  • A small pinch of salt, to bring out the sweetness (optional)
  • Additional ice (as needed) 
  1. Add the above ingredients (except ice) to a blender.
  2. Blend on high speed until smooth.
  3. Add ice and additional milk as needed. (If you want the shake thicker/colder, add ice. If you want it less sweet/chocolaty, add additional milk and/or ice.)
  4. Enjoy!
